Puteri Umno exco member Natassia Roslan has urged employers not to put their female employees in harm's way, following an outcry over the sexual harassment of female journalists by politicians.

Commenting on the furore this week, she lauded the journalist 'Ally', who had spoken up about her predicament, and said employers should also play their part.

"What I think should also be highlighted is that employers must play a role in ensuring the safety of their employees, as Ally did mention that she had brought this matter up to her boss, but was nonetheless asked to proceed and use it as an advantage to get more invaluable scoops.

"I don't think it was right to allow her to be exposed to such risks, knowing that she has already made a complaint about being sexually harassed," Natassia told Malaysiakini when asked to comment.

On Tuesday, Asian Correspondent reported a female junior reporter under the pseudonym Ally, who claimed a politician from the "ruling political party" had sent her messages in 2014 about how he had “dreamt about her riding him in bed”.

Ally also said that the same politician had once stroked her thigh during an interview in his office when his assistant left the room briefly.

Natassia said others like Ally should also speak out if harassed.

"Personally, I am truly proud of her bravery to come forward and speak up about this matter.

"We in the Puteri legal bureau always believe that women who have been wronged, especially in cases involving sexual harassment and abuse, should learn to be fearless and speak up as they are not alone in this matter.

"There are many bodies and authorities who are willing to hear them out and help.

"I hope that she has made all the necessary police reports and seeks medical assistance, if needed.

"This act of bravery by Ally shall operate as a reminder for people not to easily take advantage of women, no matter who you may be - ’powerful’ or not," Natassia added.
