A straw poll conducted in Kuala Lumpur indicates that many Malaysians don't agree with plans to boycott or spoil votes at the 14th general election (GE14)

"There's no need to do that… Why would you want to spoil votes?" senior citizen Abu Bakar Siddiq told KiniTV.

"There's no need to spoil your votes, no need to boycott," he added.

Abu Bakar was among several people KiniTV spoke to in Bangsar on Wednesday.

There is currently an ongoing social media campaign, dubbed #UndiRosak, urging the public to spoil their GE14 votes if they were dissatisfied with the choices given on their ballot slips.

Yuni Sharif hoped that Malaysians would not throw away their votes.

“Why must we waste our votes when we were given the right to vote. As for me, GE14 is a must to vote. I hope that younger voters will also come out to vote,” she said.

Ma Jing Da (name transliterated) said even if voters were not fully satisfied with Pakatan Harapan, voting for the opposition bloc would still be better than the alternative.

"BN has ruled this country for many years, the people have lots of dissatisfaction. We, as the people, should use the vote we have to decide how our future should be.

"Even though they may not have much hope or confidence in Harapan, but at least some change will still be better than no change," Ma said.

Trader Azhar Noh voiced a similar sentiment, saying it was unacceptable to boycott the election, for GE14 will be a chance to change the government.

"There won't be a new government if they boycott,” Azhar said.

It is not clear how widespread support for the #UndiRosak movement is.

Bersih secretariat member Mandeep Singh is convinced by social media chatter that the main grievance of the #UndiRosak advocates is the prospect of Dr Mahathir Mohamad returning to power.

Mandeep proposed that the #UndiRosak advocates train their guns on Mahathir instead of asking the people to spoil their votes.

Mahathir and other politicians have sought to diffuse the movement and have called on the people to vote.
