Aliran activist Sarajun Hoda Abdul Hassan has been released from police custody late last night.

It was reported that he had been arrested earlier yesterday, under Section 298 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act (CMA).

Jay Jay Denis, who was present during Sarajun's release, confirmed that the activist was released from the Dang Wangi police district headquarters around 12.30am.

He said that police from Bukit Aman recorded Sarajun’s statement and they will inform Sarajun within a month if they will proceed with the charges.

Sarajun’s phone was also seized by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), he added.

The investigation is purportedly over a Facebook post he published from October last year, which has since been removed.

Malaysiakini has attempted to contact Sarajun for more information.

Section 298 of the Penal Code punishes remarks with deliberate intent to wound the religious feelings of any person.

Section 233 of the CMA, meanwhile, covers misuse of network services.
