AirAsia is the latest airline to offer a waiver on flight change fees for bookings that fall on May 9.

The offer will apply to Malaysians only and must be executed before April 20.

Ticketholders can perform one date change without flight change fee to postpone travel by up to thirty days, subject to seat availability and any fare or tax differences.

Alternatively, ticketholders can choose to retain the fare value for future travel, which much be redeemed within 90 calendar days from the date of credit issue.

AirAsia is the third airline after Cathay Pacific and Malindo Airways to offer flight change fee waivers.

Hong Kong-based carrier Cathay Pacific was the first to come up with this scheme, offering ticketholders to delay their travel by up to two months from the voting day.

This waiver does not apply to fare or tax differences due to the seasonality of the new travel date.

The best offer, so far, appears to be from Malindo which offered a similar scheme, although the waiver also covered the fare difference.

Cathay Pacific's offer had caused caretaker deputy home minister Nur Jazlan Mohamed to complain. He expressed concern if the airline was now in the business of regime change.

The caretaker deputy minister, however, appeared unaware that Malindo and AirAsiaX had special promotions tied in with the 2013 general elections.

MAS joins in

Meanwhile, Bernama reports that MAS and its sister airlines, Firefly and MASwings, are also waiving flight change fees for GE14.

According to the airline, the offer is aimed at allowing Malaysians to fulfill their responsibilities as voters.

“The waiver is applicable for all types of tickets, where the travel date falls between May 8 and 10 either inbound or outbound.

"Only one change is permitted, and it must be done within 10 days from today,” it said.

The airline added that passengers would be allowed to delay their travel dates for up to two months, and that all fare subclass and seasonality surcharges would apply.
