GE14 | PKR deputy president Azmin Ali has confirmed Gan Pei Nei was dropped as Harapan's candidate in Rawang due to a complaint of misusing allocations for her constituency.
"That was what I was told," he said when asked to confirm the reason for Gan not being fielded in Rawang for her third election.
Azmin, the caretaker Selangor menteri besar, however, said there is no record in the state government to show that she indeed misused her constituency funds.
"Not that I know of. To be fair, she has been a very committed, hardworking assemblyperson," he said when met at the Gombak nomination centre today.
"The issue was raised, but my prime concern is that anyone who has been accused must be given a fair opportunity to defend oneself.
"Gan Pei Nei has put up a written explanation (together with) evidence to the party to suggest that she is innocent," he said.
"I don't know what is next, but certainly the party will look into it and she has every right to defend herself," he added.
Regardless of the incident, he urged Rawang voters to vote for Gan's replacement Chua Wei Kiat.
"Our main concern is to knock out Umno and BN, Gan herself has been very committed (to the cause)."
It was the prerogative of the president and PKR selection committee to decide the candidate list.
On Monday, hours before the Selangor PKR candidates for GE14 were announced, Gan held an emotionally-charged press conference and claimed she could be dropped.
She also stated she had not been given a chance to defend herself against the accusation.
