Yoursay: No honeymoon period, time for Harapan to get to work

YOURSAY | ‘The future of Malaysia and Malaysians are now in your hands.’

Mahathir returns, sworn in as 7th PM

Anonymous 7478653098613829: Congratulations to Dr Mahathir Mohamad and the leaders of Pakatan Harapan for a campaign well fought.

Please govern the country well and the rakyat will be grateful. We want a strong and clean government. The future of Malaysia and Malaysians are now in your hands.

Ronald: Yes, congratulations, Mahathir. Now, we look forward not just to your stewardship of our country, but to right the wrongs that you agreed should not have happened in the past under your watch.

You have a fantastic opportunity to help bring Malaysia back to what it was once before - the most successful multiracial society in the world where all of us, irrespective of race and religion, worked and lived harmoniously together.

This is a unique and rare legacy you can proudly leave us Malaysians with.

Not Convinced: There is no honeymoon period for Harapan. The expectations of the Malaysian people are high.

Harapan must move fast to implement the changes it had promised to make in the first 100 days.

Overseas Voter: Once hated and feared for his authoritarian-style, but now loved for his vision, sacrifice, graciousness, and tenacity.

Mahathir has earned not only our respect but our love. Dr M, thank you for rescuing Malaysia. May Almighty God grant you wisdom to lead and heal this nation of ours.

Certain heads must fall, warns Dr M

MahuSeeLui: Where abuse of power is evident, those public officials should be prosecuted.

I wonder what attorney-general (AG) Mohamed Apandi Ali has to say, given that he is not only the adviser to the government but also the public prosecutor.

Wearing two hats is a bad idea. It’s time to change that and separate the functions. Appoint an independent public prosecutor who is answerable to Parliament.

Anonymous 2436471476414726: Mahathir, I agree with you that certain heads must roll. There are simply too many instances of unprofessional conduct of those appointed by the last administration.

Where this involves abuse of power, such people should have no place in your administration.

Tun, the days ahead are going to be tough for you, with cabinet appointments to be made and having to deal with state governments who are now in the opposition.

May Allah bless you with the wisdom and good health to steer our country to greatness.

Cogito Ergo Sum: While the list of those who aided and abetted the former PM is long, there were a few individuals who made Malaysia look imbecilic by their slavish behaviour.

As civil servants, their duties are to serve the people, not a thief. I am sure Mahathir, who was finance minister, knows who they are.

Alunan Ombak: Malaysiakini has undoubtedly played a big and significant role as a leading alternative news portal and change agent in Malaysian politics, unlike the much-detested newspapers such as The Star, New Straits Times and Utusan Malaysia, to name a few.

BN heavyweight GE14 casualties: 8 ministers, 19 deputies

Anonymous_534b7352: BN has good credible leaders still. Former PM Najib Razak and his cronies truly have single-handedly gifted the premiership to Harapan because of their kleptocratic practices.

Similarly, if Harapan leaders behave like him, I am certain BN will put up a credible fight in GE15. Don’t ever take the voters for granted.

Ipoh Pp: I take great pride in thanking Malaysiakini for all the news it has provided us fearlessly.

Also to Mahathir at age 92 for righting the wrongs of his past, and for bringing together this coalition, and all others who helped to put us where we are today.

The past prime minister should be brought to account, along with the Election Commission chairperson and his team for all the pain they caused the ordinary folk during polling day and the high-handed decisions he made to please his masters.

Anonymous_3e86: The blame for BN’s defeat must go to Najib. He has single-handedly brought BN down. His numerous scandals and alleged crimes were brushed aside by his party members and lawmakers.

There was blatant corruption which was so obvious to the rakyat. His wife Rosmah Mansor’s lavish lifestyle angered the rakyat.

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) was implemented to save the country from bankruptcy due to the unabated spending and corruption, which burdened the rakyat even more. His ministers spewed racial statements without blinking an eye.

The rakyat had enough. This time the rural folks felt the pinch. It was time to change.

Mahathir’s presence in Harapan gave it the push Harapan was lacking before. You can say Mahathir was the catalyst that Harapan needed to create the tsunami.

Well done Harapan and a big thank you to Mahathir.

Headhunter: With the win, our expectation for Harapan is to reinstate the country to its glory days again. Learn from BN’s mistakes and chart a new direction so that we are on par with the best democracies in the world.

Remember, if we can dump BN, we can dump you too. Our expectation and our hopes for you is on a much higher plane. We know you can do it because there is a lot of talent in your group.

You should spend more time looking after the interest of the people, and less time politicking. After the mess created by BN over the years, things can only go but up.

As far as the rakyat is concerned, the celebration is over and it is time for you to pull up your socks and get to work.

But first, recover the country's stolen wealth from the thieves and prevent them from leaving the country.
