Najib quits as Umno chief, barred by Immigration

Najib Abdul Razak quit as Umno and BN chief after leading the coalition to its first electoral defeat.

Najib was also barred by Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad from leaving the country due to pending investigations.

Crowds had turned up at the Subang Airport to prevent Najib and his wife Rosmah Mansor from boarding a flight to Jakarta.

Mahathir instructed police to unseal the 1MDB audit report, which was protected under the OSA.

Police raided an apartment linked to Najib, on suspicion of sensitive government documents being kept there.

Dr M makes first cabinet appointments

Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad appointed DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng as finance minister, Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin as home minister, and Amanah president Mohamad Sabu as defence minister.

He also appointed former finance minister Daim Zainuddin, former Bank Negara governor Zeti Akhtar Aziz, former Petronsa president Hasan Merican, tycoon Robert Kuok, and economist Jomo Kwame Sundaram as government advisors.

PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli claimed Mahathir had bulldozed the appointments without consulting PKR.
