Despite its earlier reservations, PAS today said that it accepts the appointment of Tommy Thomas as the new attorney-general. 

In a statement today, PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said that the party accepts the decision of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to consent to the appointment with an "open heart."

"PAS congratulates and wishes the new attorney-general well, and hopes he will always act according to the constitution, preserve the rule of law, and be fair and impartial in his role, especially in matters involving Islam and its related institutions. 

"PAS is willing to cooperate in all these good things, and at the same time, act as a constructive opposition and provide check and balance by giving views, opinions, and making a stand in matters that concern the public's wellbeing," he said.

Previously, PAS had been among the dissenting voices to Thomas being named the government's sole candidate for the post of AG.

The party's information leader Nasrudin Hasan had served up an interesting analogy as to why he did not support the nomination – saying that even if a non-Muslim neighbour is kind and well-liked, he still cannot be made the chairperson of the surau.

The impasse over the appointment ended after the king issued a statement early this morning consenting to Thomas becoming the new AG.
