De facto Pakatan Harapan leader Anwar Ibrahim has withdrawn his suit against the Election Commission over not being allowed to vote in the 2015 Permatang Pauh by-election.

Anwar’s lawyer, Shahid Adli Kamarudin, informed the Federal Court deputy registrar Wan Fatimah Zaharah Wan Yussof of the withdrawal during case management today.

"Anwar has agreed to withdraw, and following that we have already filed a notice of discontinuance.

"The withdrawal of the application follows Anwar being given a pardon by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V," the lawyer said.

Anwar first filed suit after the EC barred him from voting in the Permatang Pauh by-election, which was triggered after he was forced to vacate the seat due to being convicted for sodomy on Feb 10, 2015.

At the time, Anwar and his lawyers said the application was filed to ensure prisoners would be allowed to vote.

Although the judge ruled that Malaysians held in prisons do have a conditional right to vote, Anwar’s originating summons was nonetheless dismissed by the High Court and later the Court of Appeal.

While serving time in prison, Anwar had also mounted a challenge against the controversial appointments of chief justice Md Raus Sharif and Court of Appeal president Justice Zulkefli Ahmad Makinudin.

This followed Zulkefli not allowing Anwar to be present in court during a hearing on leave to appeal his case against the EC.

Both Raus and Zulkefli have since tendered their resignations, and will vacate their posts by July 31.
