Penang Amanah chief Mujahid Yusof Rawa is hoping for a new Islamic affairs portfolio and change in the national policy on Islam to draw Malay support for Pakatan Harapan.

Mujahid said with the new portfolio and change in the country's Islamic policies, Pakatan Harapan will win over the Malay community soon.

"We would do it like how we did it in Penang. It would probably take a shorter time to do so," Mujahid said at the party's state Aidilfitri celebrations in Sungai Dua, Penang.

“Give us some time. Soon we will break that Umno dogma. They have been around for over 60 years, InsyaAllah we will prevail," said the Amanah vice-president.

Mujahid, who is tipped to be a cabinet minister, said Harapan aims to reform the Malays to be progressive so that they would embrace multiculturalism.

"The end result we seek is to have Malays identify themselves as Malaysians and not Malay first," added the Parit Buntar MP.

Mujahid was commenting on former Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin's claim that his party still commands the lion share of Malay votes in the May 9 polls, despite seeing the end of BN's 60-year rule.

On Friday, Khairy boasted that Umno still has 60 percent of the Malay-Muslim votes, obtaining 54 seats in Parliament at the 14th general election.

He urged Umno members to feel proud and not to feel dejected over its electoral loss.

However, five Umno MPs have already left the party, with the latest being Masjid Tanah MP Mas Ermieyati Shamsuddin. 

Mujahid also dismissed Khairy's claim on the Malay support, saying "he can keep on dreaming".

However, with a tinge of sarcasm, he added: "We are very excited to see him (Khairy) as an opposition member in Parliament".

Mujahid said he was also shocked with Ahmad Zahid Hamidi being elected as the party's new president as "we thought there would be a major reshuffle".

"They have stuck to the old faces instead. Usually, new faces are chosen in the case of an electoral defeat. I am stunned and shocked that a leader who is currently under probe would be elected president."

Zahid, the former deputy prime minister, has confirmed that he has been summoned by the MACC to record his statement tomorrow.

He is requested to clarify certain issues over the RM800,000 fund linked to a welfare foundation owned by his family members.
