Najib releases video message, decries political vengeance

Former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak has released a pre-recorded message following his arrest earlier today.

In the video message posted on his Facebook page, he apologised for his weaknesses, but stressed that the accusations against him are not entirely true.

The former premier added that images from the raids on properties linked to him were inconclusive and coupled with false rumours.

The video also noted that Najib will defend himself in court, adding that none can escape judgment – including those currently in power.

The message was set against a backdrop of images of Najib – many of which showed him in prayer – and a melancholic score.

Najib was arrested by the MACC in relation to transactions involving SRC International Sdn Bhd, a former subsidiary of 1MDB.

He will be charged tomorrow, and is reportedly facing over 10 counts of criminal breach of trust.

Najib also condemned the impending charges against him in a separate message delivered via his spokesperson.

"The arrest of Najib by MACC today was to be expected, as since taking over the government, the Pakatan Harapan leadership has 'delivered the guilty verdict' against the former premier in public.

"The SRC charges against Najib tomorrow, as well the ongoing 1MDB and anti-money laundering investigations against him are politically motivated and the result of political vengeance by the Harapan leadership under Dr Mahathir Mohamad."

The spokesperson also noted that Najib will contest the charges and clear his name in court.

Malaysiakini has translated Najib's pre-recorded Bahasa Malaysia message, which is reproduced below:

To the Malaysian people,

If you are hearing this message, that means action has been taken against me.

I would like to apologise to Malaysians. Malaysians deserve the best leadership.

I have done my best, but I am aware that it is not enough as there were many weaknesses.

However, I would like to express what is in my heart to my beloved Malaysians.

Yes, I am not perfect, as any normal person. However, believe me, that the accusations against me are not entirely true.

It is true that my home was raided for a number of days. It is true that I was investigated and there were items that were seized.

But all these are not yet conclusive. There are many news and pictures circulated that are in the form of false rumours, spin, and slander.

Let the investigation continue. I have yet to get a chance to defend myself.

Yes, I was defeated (in the general election) and I accept the people's decision. I am also aware that this defeat exposes me more serious accusations.

It is true that everyone is equal before the law, not only in this world but the hereafter.

No one can escape, including those who hold power in the current government and those who spread rumours to shame others.

I accept that today is the time my family and I are tested. But I am grateful as not everyone has the chance to be tested in this life. We all know that it is far tougher in the afterlife.

I will be strong in facing this. After all, Allah is all-knowing, merciful and caring.
