Perodua cars slightly cheaper now compared to GST era

Most car models offered by Perodua are cheaper now, despite the implementation of SST, when compared to the period where GST was imposed.

Perodua Sales Sdn Bhd managing director Zahari Husin said most of their models were about one to three percent cheaper.

"Based on the new tax structure, almost all Perodua models see price reductions compared to the GST price structure," he said in a statement.

According to automotive website paultan.org, the only vehicle that cost slightly more post-SST (without insurance) is the basic Alza models.

The website also reported that the Axia 1.0 Standard E manual transmission model had the most notable price drop. It is now 4.07 percent cheaper than it was before June 1.

In a related development, Proton has announced that it will absorb SST charges for this month only.

"While Proton acknowledges that SST will affect car prices, for September the company will absorb the SST for all our models to give buyers additional time to make a purchase.

"This will benefit them during this transitional period and help Proton maintain the sales momentum it has recently built," said Proton Edar CEO Abdul Rashid Musa.

This comes after Proton managed to sell 9,501 cars in August - its best month since July 2015.

Carmakers enjoyed brisk sales between June 1 and Aug 31 thanks to Putrajaya's decision to zero-rate GST before SST kicked in.
