Kelantan only met 1pct of debt repayment for 2016 - Sim

The Kelantan government repaid just one percent of its debt obligations to the federal government in 2016, according to Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Steven Sim.

In a statement today, Sim said the Kelantan government was supposed to repay RM395.83 million in 2016, but only RM3.94 million was received by Putrajaya.

"The people should evaluate themselves if such financial performance shows good (financial) management," he said.

Sim's revelation is the latest in a week-long tit-for-tat exchange between PAS and DAP leaders on Kelantan's finances.

This was sparked by Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng's speech in the Dewan Rakyat, where he mentioned in passing that the state had to seek Putrajaya's help to pay its civil servants.

When PAS leaders accused Lim of lying, he produced the relevant documents to back his claim, only for PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang to accuse the minister of being morally challenged.

Meanwhile, Sim urged PAS leaders to stop attempts to manipulate public opinion on Kelantan's debt situation, and accept that the state government's financial affairs were not ideal.

He said recent official figures clearly showed that the state's debt was rising and was running on a deficit.
