Address the people's worries wisely - Anwar

All Pakatan Harapan leaders must tackle the problems and worries of the people wisely, said Harapan de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim.

Speaking at the Pakatan Harapan Charity Dinner 2018 held at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC) last night, he said the people’s high hopes on the government elected in the 14th general election (GE14) must be fulfilled.

“We should not be worried if the people feel restless and disappointed as they had hoped we can correct our institutions faster.

“As someone who has been around for a long time, I urge Harapan leaders in the government to be more alert and listen to the grievances of the people, which must be tackled properly, not hurriedly like before,” said the PKR president.

Speaking at the same platform, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said under the leadership of Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, the Malaysian economy had shown positive indications of recovering.

He said claims that no investments were coming into Malaysia were untrue as statistics showed that approved foreign direct investments (FDI) in the manufacturing sector increased to RM35 billion from May to September this year compared with RM7.3 billion for the same period last year.

This increase showed the strong confidence foreign investors had in Malaysia especially with an increase of 379 percent in the total manufacturing FDI approved after the transfer of power on May 9, he said.

“This is the result of the leadership of Prime Minister (Mahathir)... We promised we would do our best for the benefit of the people regardless of race and background.

“Harapan does not represent one community, one race, one district or one state. We represent everyone regardless of ethnic background,” he said.

Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin said the government understood the people’s views that many things had not been implemented since Harapan took over the government seven months ago.

He said there were actually many things the people did not know, including the fact that Mahathir had confided in him that there were many demands and so little time to fulfil them.

“(When) I go to the Prime Minister’s Office, there are many files, which means the demands of the rakyat for what they want are very high,” he said.

However, Muhyiddin said, with the support of all parties, efforts by the Harapan government to build a new Malaysia will become a reality.

Meanwhile, in his speech, Amanah president Mohamad Sabu said Harapan will continue to uphold democracy, defend the Federal Constitution, protect all communities and work hard to meet the hopes of the people.

“We will be embarrassed if we have to say we are tired because our leader is 93 years old, most special in the world. We will work hard and meet the demands of the rakyat and do the best possible,” he said.
