Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng today denied he told the media that a recent visit by several senior police officers to Turkey was funded by lottery operator Da Ma Cai.
Instead, what he meant was the trip was sponsored by the Totalisator Board, which receives its funding from the company, he said.
"I was asked during the press conference at the Finance Ministry (MOF), that since the trip was funded by the Totalisator Board, which is under MOF, was MOF funding the trip.
"Then I said 'no', as the Totalisator Board is under an Act that allows them to make decisions without referring to the MOF, as long as they get approval from their board of director," he clarified.
To the next question on where the board gets funding from, he had replied it gets it from Pan Malaysian Pools Sdn Bhd (better known as Da Ma Cai), added Lim.
"I never said they (the police group) was funded straight by any company," Lim told witnessing the signing of an agreement for the LRT3 project in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur today.
Yesterday, inspector-general of police Mohamad Fuzi Harun denied that the trip was conducted for entertainment purposes, as certain quarters had claimed on social media.
The Totalisator Board is the authority that oversees the horse betting industry in Malaysia.
