BN will prioritise students' welfare if given chance to rule again, says Najib
The welfare of students will be among BN's main focal points if it rules the country again, former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak promised today.

Speaking at an event with students from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, he also called for the Pakatan Harapan government to bring back policies which assist students financially, including the MyBrain grants for postgraduate studies.
"I want to note here my commitment, and the commitment of my friends in BN, that if we get another chance to come back to power in the future, the issue of students welfare will be given priority.
"(The cancellation of) the MyBrain programme... this has left me speechless, because it helped students to further their studies at the Master's and PhD levels.
"The effects of the MyBrain cancellation will not be visible in one or two days. But in the future, it will create a void in our country's academic intellectuals," he claimed.
"Thus, in my personal capacity, together with the students (here), we want to urge (the government) to continue the MyBrain programme," he added during a press conference at the event held at a cafe in Bandar Baru Bangi.
The event, organised by a students group, was initially scheduled to take place at UKM's debate corner, but was called off by its management at the 11th hour, citing security reasons.
Put on hold
Last year, Education Minister Maszlee Malik had said that the scholarship programme for postgraduate studies would be put on hold as they had not received a budget for MyBrain.
The programme was introduced in 2008 by the BN government and was placed under the then-Higher Education Ministry, with an aim of producing 60,000 PhD holders by 2023.
At the press conference, Najib also urged the Harapan government not to compel fresh graduates to repay their study loans above more than what they can afford.
He asked Putrajaya to reinstate the 20 percent discount option for those who make a full settlement on their PTPTN loans.

When Singapore left Malaysia one could argue that the education system was on par or even that Malaysia was better. 60 years later thanks to BN rule Singapore has raced ahead to be one of the best in the world competing with Finland for top place and Malaysia has fallen behind Singapore and South Korea and is now languishing middle of the pack if not lower. In fact the non state school like the Chinese Medium Schools are even rated more highly that even Malay parents send their children there. Although not stated I believe one of the reasons for the reluctance to recognize these schools is that if they are recognized then who will send their children to government schools where standards are so low and there is an over emphasis on religious education. Do not forget recently there was an article while government schools learn about how to beat their wives in compliant ways the non state vernacular schools are learning Mathematics and Science. So now out of power the new found zeal to focus on education is nothing short of hypocritical. For all those who complain about Harapan bear in mind they have only be in power 7 months only. They are now running a country where the public servants not all but a significant amount are corrupt, lazy and tainted with a sense of self entitlement. With this background it is understandable that change will not come quickly. The real issue is whether the Harapan is honest. While there are some areas of concern by and large they are much better than the previous BN led government. There is also a freer press and ore scrutiny. So if the leaders of BN and their new found allies really want to improve education, no need to wait until the next elections, sell your luxury hand bags, watches, cars and houses and donate them to the building of new schools and laboratories.
