Sangeet to re-look suit against CJ after gov't green-lights RCI
The High Court in Kuala Lumpur today granted lawyer Sangeet Kaur Deo's request for time to determine if the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) on the judiciary would render her suit against the chief justice academic.
Speaking to the media afterwards, Sangeet said she did not believe the RCI impinged on her case but wanted to be certain.
“In view of the RCI, we are considering the position in relation to this matter. And we are to update the court on March 13.
“I am personally of the view it (the RCI) doesn't affect the case, but I would like to have a look at that,” she added.
Meanwhile, Sangeet also served the defendants her affidavit-in-reply, which included Court of Appeal judge Hamid Sultan Abu Becker’s allegations against the judiciary which led to the formation of the RCI.
The defendants, led by lawyer S Narkunavathy, would communicate their reply on March 13 as well.
Sangeet is suing the chief justice - not named in her originating summons - over alleged judicial interference in her late father Karpal Singh’s sedition appeal, and on the conversion of M Indira Gandhi's children.
She is seeking a declaration that the chief justice had failed to defend the integrity and credibility of the judiciary when he failed to complete investigations relating to the above two incidents.
Last week, the government agreed to establish an RCI into the alleged judicial interference.
This after judge Hamid Sultan claimed that certain members of the judiciary have been aiding private parties to defraud the government.
This was done through nominees of politicians creating contracts with the government, he had said, further alleging that once the government reneges on the contract, the private parties would take the government to court in order to claim compensation.
