SEMENYIH POLLS | Muhyiddin Yassin has challenged BN secretary-general Nazri Abdul Aziz to sue Pakatan Harapan if the appointment of non-Muslims to top government posts is unconstitutional.
"Nazri is a lawyer. If he claims we violated the Federal Constitution, he can take us to court. Please take us to court.
"But I know and he knows (we) have not violated (the constitution)," he told a ceramah in Kampung Sungai Kembung Hilir, Semenyih, last night.
The Harapan deputy president was commenting on Nazri's remarks during a ceramah in Semenyih over the weekend that only Muslims should be appointed as the chief justice, attorney-general and finance minister.
He said that non-Muslims do not swear on the Quran when taking their oath of office.
Apart from this, Nazri said Malays should not be faulted for thinking that the authorities are not prosecuting anyone in connection with the death of firefighter Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim since the attorney-general Tommy Thomas and the suspects are of the “same skin colour.”
The police are investigating Nazri, who is also a former law minister, under the Sedition Act 1948 over his remarks.
Meanwhile, Muhyiddin also dismissed Nazri's claim that Harapan does not safeguard the rights of the Malay-Muslim community.
He said that all four component parties in the coalition have signed an agreement that the rights of all races and that of the Malay rulers would be upheld.
He added that the parties also agreed to uphold Islam as the official religion.
The ceramah was attended by about 350 people - most of whom were Harapan supporters clad in red T-shirts.
Kampung Sungai Kembung Hilir sits in the Sungai Kembung polling district with 1,765 voters, where 99.54 percent of them are Malay.
The Semenyih by-election was called following the death of Harapan state assemblyperson Bakhtiar Mohd Nor.
The state constituency consists of 54,503 voters, with 69.2 percent Malays, 16.8 percent Chinese and 13.3 percent Indians.
