BN secretary-general Nazri Abdul Aziz will not attend the coalition’s supreme council meeting on Friday.
This is after coalition partners MCA and MIC threatened not to attend the meeting if he was present.
“If I am being barred by them (MCA and MIC) from attending, then it's best I absent myself to allow it to proceed," he told reporters at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today.
On Monday, MCA president Wee Ka Siong and MIC president SA Vigneswaran issued a joint statement that they do not consider Nazri’s appointment as BN secretary-general to be legal as it was not agreed to by the coalition's supreme council.
"Nazri's appointment as the BN secretary-general was never discussed nor given official consent by the BN supreme council although it was stated by BN chairperson Ahmad Zahid Hamidi while officiating the MIC annual general meeting at the PWTC on Oct 27, 2018," they pointed out.
Nazri said he had no intention of resigning from the post, saying he would only step down if a unanimous decision was reached that he should do so.
"I do not want to step down. But if they decide to remove me at the meeting, then so be it, "he said.
Nazri had initially indicated his intention to attend the meeting and defend himself.
"At first I wanted to attend so we could discuss it as gentlemen face-to-face and if there is a charge against me, I can defend myself.”
He added that his absence might now facilitate the discussion of MCA’s resolution calling for the dissolution of BN.
Nazri added the post of BN secretary-general had initially been offered to Khairy Jamaluddin but that the Rembau MP had rejected it.
"For six months nobody wanted this post. Then Ahmad Zahid offered it, so I took it, " he said.
Nazri said he accepted the post after Zahid, who was then BN chairperson, of announced it at the MIC AGM.
"All MIC representatives cheered when it was announced,” he said.
