MCA passes resolution to dissolve BN, set up new coalition

MCA AGM | MCA passed a resolution for the party to push for the dissolution of BN and form a new alliance at the party's annual general meeting (AGM) today.

The new alliance will be set up at an appropriate time, according to MCA president Wee Ka Siong.

Almost all central delegates who attended the closed-door meeting raised their hands to endorse the resolution after much discussion on the matter, he said.

Only one delegate objected to the resolution, he told the media at a press conference after the AGM concluded.

Many delegates, included 12 Youth members, took part in the debate, he said.

However, Wee declined to reveal the identity of the delegate who had objected the resolution.

"The AGM authorises the Central Committee to pave the way for the dissolution of BN and forge an effective alliance," read the resolution that was passed at the AGM.

Wee also read out the basis for the resolution: "In order to revive and restart, BN must be disbanded with the full understanding and consensus of component parties, so that there is room for freedom in carrying out innovation and reconstruction."

"Meanwhile, re-establishing a political alliance will be at an appropriate time when there is consensus regarding the concept and principles being upheld," he added.

'This is my floor'

Wee said the MCA Central Committee will present the party's resolution at the BN Supreme Council.

He, however, declined to elaborate further on how MCA would go about facilitating BN's dissolution.

Earlier today, MCA Kluang division chief Gan Ping Sieu said the party should quit BN as it has no say in dissolving BN.

"If you want to interview Gan Ping Sieu, go ahead. But this is my floor, I will talk about what was decided during the AGM," Wee said.

He declined to comment if MCA will accept Umno or PAS as its new coalition partner.

"I don't want to fall into your trap," he said.

Meanwhile, Wee said media had wrongly reported that several central delegates had staged a walkout in protest of the resolution earlier today.

The MCA president said that the delegates had not walked out in protest but gone out for lunch, and they had been given an opportunity to participate in the debate.

It was the media that had pre-empted what had happened, he added.

Wee denied that the resolution was drafted solely by him.

The central delegates could amend the wording of the resolution but they did not, he said.
