Ministers finally have their duties gazetted

Pakatan Harapan ministers and deputy ministers have finally had their duties gazetted.

According to the Federal Gazette, the Ministers of the Federal Government Order was gazetted on May 14, in accordance with the Ministerial Functions Act 1969.

Malaysiakini had previously sighted a copy of the order dated January 22, which was taken off the Federal Gazette for unexplained reasons.

De facto law minister Liew Vui Keong claimed last Saturday to not be aware that the January order was taken off the gazette.

The Harapan government's ministers order is noticeably thinner than that gazetted by the previous BN government.

This is due to the BN gazette including a description of each ministry's duties, as well as of the agencies under their purview.

A comparison between the current version of Harapan's minister's order and the earlier nixed version, meanwhile, shows some minor differences.

Notably, in the January version, the Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) exco secretariat was under the Prime Minister's Department, but there is no mention of it now.

This appears to indicate that Mara is now fully under the control of the Rural Development Minister.

The January version also listed IJN Holdings Sdn Bhd as being under the Health Ministry, but it is now back under the Finance Ministry.

The gazette is meant to formalise the duties of ministers and lists the agencies and departments that fall under their purview.

As lawyer New Sin Yew said last week, the government's actions prior to the order being gazetted are still valid.
