Mahfuz ready to step aside in the event of cabinet reshuffle

Deputy Human Resources Minister Mahfuz Omar said he is prepared to be dropped if Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad decides to have a cabinet reshuffle.

It is the prime minister’s prerogative to cull someone from the cabinet if he feels the ministers are not performing up to task, Mahfuz said.

“If Mahathir sees that a minister has weaknesses and is unable to improve upon those weaknesses, then it is his right to do a cabinet reshuffle.

“I have no issues with any names from any parties being dropped including myself if that is the judgement of the prime minister,” he said last night, as reported by Berita Harian.

The Pokok Sena MP was responding to remarks from Mahathir’s communication and media adviser Kadir Jasin, who had suggested that underperforming ministers, menteri besars and state exco members quit willingly.

Mahfuz said Kadir has his right to freedom of speech and ministers should take heed of every criticism.

Ministers and deputy ministers should always strive to do better and ensure that they are carrying out their duties well, he said.

“There isn’t a single minister right now who can claim to be doing a great job even though the prime minister is 50 percent satisfied with the performance of his cabinet in the first year of Pakatan Harapan’s administration.

“As a deputy minister, I have never been satisfied with my performance but we must always strive to better ourselves,” Mahfuz said.
