Gov't to shut down all illegal factories in Pasir Gudang, says Yeo

PARLIAMENT | The government will close down all illegal factories in Pasir Gudang within a month following the recurrence of air pollution in the area, pledged Energy, Science, Technology, Environment, and Climate Change Minister Yeo Bee Yin.
"Today I have a meeting with the Johor menteri besar. We plan to do something where we target illegal factories.
"Within a month's time, we will conduct a joint operation to close down all illegal factories in Pasir Gudang.
"I urge the rakyat and all the lawmakers in the House to report to the Environment Department if they have information on illegal factories," she told the Dewan Rakyat during the Minister's Question Time today.
Yeo rebutted Hassan Abdul Karim (Harapan-Pasir Gudang), who had asked whether the two pollution incidents in his constituency was due to weak enforcement by the DOE.
In her reply, she said the DEO had stepped up enforcement “by 300 percent” after the Sungai Kim Kim incident in March.
Two days ago, Yeo said the government would not approve any more applications for the construction of new chemical plants in Pasir Gudang.
There are currently 2,005 factories in Pasir Gudang, with 250 being chemical plants.
In the latest incident, at least 10 people were admitted and more than 700 sought treatment in nearby hospitals after complaining of breathing difficulties and dizziness.
