Declaring assets is a communist, socialist concept that may have been dreamt up by DAP, said PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang.

"Declaring assets in general is a communist and socialist theory. Maybe it was dreamt up by DAP which influences the government today.

"Socialists, they appear to want to limit wealth, but in socialist countries that became liberal, the socialist leaders are the richest," Hadi said at a press conference in Marang today.

On Monday, the Dewan Rakyat approved a special motion without objections, compelling all lawmakers to declare their assets.

However, after the vote, opposition MPs including those from PAS came out to condemn the motion.

PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man had argued that asset declaration would put lawmakers and their families at risk, and that it went against Islam as the religion discouraged the act of displaying wealth.

Hadi, however, said the Islamic view on asset declaration depended on the situation.

"In Islam, it follows reality. Sometimes declaring assets is compulsory (wajib), sometimes it is forbidden (haram), and sometimes it is encouraged (sunat).

"Declaring assets for individuals who may get involved in corruption, tax evasion, then it is compulsory.

"Those who want to boast about their wealth, and show off by declaring their assets, that is forbidden," he said.

He added that those who are known not to possess wealth need not declare it.
