Pakatan Harapan will form a committee to examine how they can fulfil the promises made in their election manifesto, said Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
“One year has passed and we find that there are some promises we can implement, but the time has come for us to study how we can fulfil our promises.
“For this, a committee will be formed with certain terms of reference so they can examine how to implement the promises made in the Harapan manifesto,” he said in a press conference after the Harapan presidential council meeting at Perdana Leadership Foundation in Putrajaya today.
Mahathir also responded to those urging for a Prime Minister’s Question Time (PMQT) in Parliament, saying he will accede to these calls.
“Every Wednesday, I will appear in Parliament to answer questions.
“It is not my fault why I have not gone to Parliament because there are no questions for me.
“Now even if there are no questions for me, I will still go,” he added.
Last Thursday, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Liew Vui Keong said the PMQT will be implemented in the next session of the Dewan Rakyat which begins in October.
This came barely a week after the minister first shot down the PMQT idea on the basis that Mahathir often attended the Dewan Rakyat to answer questions.
“The prime minister has expressed his intention that he is interested to answer the questions,” he had said.
Automatic voter registration
Mahathir also revealed today that the bill to lower the voting age to 18 years old will be tabled together with automatic voter registration.
The bill will be tabled in the Dewan Rakyat next Tuesday.
Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman later said they have also agreed to reduce the minimum age to be a member of the Dewan Rakyat to 18 years old.
The minimum age to be a member of the Dewan Rakyat, as well as the automatic voter registration, were the opposition’s request for them to support the constitutional amendment.
Mahathir also said that Harapan plans to get rid of the word “mandatory” for death sentences when it comes to drug trafficking.
“We will get rid of the word mandatory. We maintain that the judges can make the choice whether they want to impose the death sentence or jail sentence, but the jail sentence cannot be less than 10 years, because we think this is a serious business that needs to have a heavy punishment,” he said.
