Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman has urged the media to investigate the reason behind the Johor state government changing its stand twice on the youth age cap.

“I have been informed about why it happened.

“I think the best way forward is for our media friends to investigate why this happened although a consensus was reached,” he told reporters at the Parliament lobby this afternoon.

The minister said the matter would be discussed again at the cabinet meeting this Friday.

On Monday, Johor Menteri Besar Dr Sahruddin Jamal said his administration would not abide with the federal government's decision to define youths as those aged 15 to 30 rather than 15 to 40.

The new definition was spelt out in the Youth Societies and Youth Development (Amendment) Bill 2019, which the Dewan Rakyat passed last week.

Yesterday, Johor exco Sheikh Umar Bagharib Ali, who is in charge of youth affairs, issued a statement stating otherwise, only to issue another statement several hours later to reaffirm Shahruddin's earlier statement.

Adding to the intrigue was Johor Crown Prince Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim posting a photograph on Twitter after meeting both Shahruddin and Sheikh Umar last night.

Meanwhile, Syed Saddiq explained that the definition of youth had been extensively discussed by the Youth and Sports Ministry and the Registrar of Youth.

He also confirmed that the matter has been discussed with all state cabinet members in charge of youth affairs and there were no objections. He said all these meetings were minuted.
