Najib should check his facts on Robert Kuok, Nazri says

Former premier Najib Abdul Razak should check his facts on the claims he made against tycoon Robert Kuok, says Padang Rengas MP Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz.

In yet another salvo against Najib, Nazri said that his criticisms of Kuok were made to defend the then-Umno president, who had accused the tycoon of supporting DAP despite benefiting from government projects.

He also maintained that what he said about the tycoon had "nothing to do" with MCA's waning support, as the trend could already be observed over the last few general elections.

"Had I not defended Najib over his statements about Kuok, they (MCA) would still have lost," he told reporters at the Parliament lobby today.

"Their loss has nothing to do with my statement. So Najib should check his facts."

At a gathering in Batu Kawan yesterday, Najib claimed that he had been informed by MCA that the decline in Chinese support was partly due to Nazri's remarks about Kuok (photo).

This followed Nazri criticising Najib's appointment as the chairperson of the BN advisory board.

Asked whether he believes that the majority of Umno members have accepted Najib's appointment, Nazri maintained that he is still against it.

"I have my own opinion. It's okay. Nothing wrong with that," he said.

"In Umno, they say, they practise democracy. So what's wrong if we criticise some moves by the party that did not even go through the supreme council?"

Together with Rembau MP Khairy Jamaluddin, Nazri poured scorn on party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi for extending Najib a political lifeline.

At a press conference in Nazri's constituency, the duo seamlessly concurred with each other that the decision was one that was personal and not in Umno's interests.
