Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari has claimed that as investigations into the sex video implicating Economic Affairs Minister Azmin Ali nears completion, it is becoming clearer who are the perpetrators.
“...This (sex video) was done by those who went through this 'dark period' (sejarah hitam), those who fought through and against this 'dark period'. In fact, becoming the basis of this struggle,” he said.
Earlier, the Selangor PKR chief also rued how the ghost from two decades ago when PKR president Anwar Ibrahim was accused of sodomy had returned to haunt PKR.
“I remember that when the issue first came to light after we celebrated (Hari Raya) Aidilfitri, suddenly, something unexpected happened. Something, which Malaysians had hoped would not happen after the 14th general election.
“(But) it is unfortunate and disheartening that there are those who are irresponsible... who do not wish to learn from history. Even if they are not afraid of God, they refused to learn from history that politics of shame and slander... would diminish pride and hope among the people,” he added.
Amirudin was speaking to reporters after a special prayer session to reject gutter politics against Azmin at the menteri besar's residence in Shah Alam last night.
Azmin, when speaking at the same function, said that he knows the identity of the mastermind behind the circulation of the sex video.
The minister, who is also PKR deputy president, had previously said the video is an inside job aimed at ruining his political career.
Last week, Inspector-General of Police Abdul Hamid Bador said while the video is most likely authentic, the facial recognition process failed to link Azmin to the recording of two men indulging in sexual acts.
The police chief also claimed that a leader of a political party was the mastermind behind the video and hundreds of thousands of ringgit were spent to produce it.
Police have detained several individuals, including Anwar's political secretary and former PKR Santubong Youth chief Haziq Abdullah Abdul Rahman, in connection with the case.
Haziq had confessed to being the other man in the video.
Speculation had been rife that the video is linked to the tussle for the prime minister's post in light of claims that Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad preferred Azmin to succeed him despite and agreement that Anwar would inherit the leadership reins.
Anwar has denied involvement in the sex video.
