“The inspection was carried out in line with the MMEA’s standard operating procedures,” said Wisma Putra in a statement in response to media queries, without naming the vessel concerned.

According to the MMEA, Wisma Putra said the vessel had experienced an engine problem, and it was subsequently escorted to Langkawi Port for repair.

“The vessel has since been released upon the completion of the repair,” it said.

Wisma Putra said the vessel with its 25-member crew, is now en route to its next port of call.

According to a foreign news agency report, an oil tanker, which shipping data showed was managed by a Chinese company under US sanctions, refused to allow an inspection by maritime authorities while anchored in Malaysian waters.

According to the report, the MMEA said the vessel (Silvana III), which anchored off Kuala Kurau on Malaysia’s west coast on Dec 5, did not follow instructions to drop its ladder to allow officers to conduct checks.
