Security firm workers lose RM231,000 to robbers

Two men took less than five minutes to rob workers of a security company outside a bank in Sungai Nibong Kecil, George Town today.

North East District police chief ACP Soffian Santong said the workers had gone to the bank in a van to deposit RM231,000 at 10.51am when the robbers struck.

The security company staff had just collected the money from a supermarket in Bukit Jambul, he said in a statement.

"Three male workers of the security company, including the driver and security guard, were in the van at the time of the incident. As one of the workers alighted from the van with three bags, a man suddenly came from behind and tried to snatch the bags,” he said.

The worker put up a struggle but the suspect hit him on the face with what looked like a pistol before fleeing with one bag containing RM231,000.

Soffian said the armed guard in the van gave chase but the robber managed to escape on the motorcycle of an accomplice who was waiting nearby.

Preliminary investigations showed that the Yamaha Y110 motorcycle bearing registration number plate BEY 408 was reported stolen in Subang Jaya, Selangor several months ago, he said.

Police are studying the CCTV cameras in the area to identify the robbers.

"Police have mounted roadblocks at exit points on the island, including the two Penang bridges, to prevent the suspects from leaving the island,” he said. — Bernama
