Progressive Democratic Party president Tiong King Sing has been appointed as the prime minister’s special envoy to China with ministerial rank.

In a statement today, the Prime Minister’s Office said Tiong (above) is tasked with strengthening bilateral relations between Malaysia and China, especially on matters of trade and investment.

It noted that the Bintulu MP had previously served as the prime minister’s special envoy to the East Asia region from 2014 to 2018.

The position of special envoy to China was previously held by DAP chairperson Tan Kok Wai, but Tan’s appointment does not have ministerial status.

In addition, the previous Pakatan Harapan government had sent former finance minister Daim Zainuddin as special envoy to renegotiate several major contracts with China state-owned enterprises.

With the latest appointment, Tiong is the second person appointed by the Perikatan Nasional-led government to become special envoy with ministerial status.

On April 2, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang was similarly appointed as special envoy to the Middle East region.
