CORONAVIRUS | There have been 43 new infections of Covid-19 today, bringing the total to 8,445.

There were also 143 recoveries bringing the total number of recoveries to 7,311, meaning there are just 1,014 active cases at the moment.

Of the new cases, five were imported, involving four Malaysians and one permanent resident.

Of the 38 local infections, 15 were Malaysians and 23 non-Malaysians. This is the first time this month that local Malaysian infections went into the double digits.

Of the non-Malaysians infected, 21 were from the Bukit Jalil immigration depot cluster who had been transferred to the Immigration Academy at Port Dickson for quarantine.

Health Ministry director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said they had tested positive after a third swab before they could be deported.

The two other migrant cases involved a worker at a vegetable wholesale market in Penampang, Sabah, and an estate worker in Temerloh Pahang.

Of the local Malaysian infections, seven were from tahfiz schools, namely two in Selangor, three in Negeri Sembilan and one each in Perak and Malacca.

One case also involved a youth in Kuala Lumpur who went to a clinic with a cold, but then tested positive for the coronavirus.

One new death was also among the newly-infected cases reported, bringing the total Covid-19 death toll so far to 120.

The latest casualty was a 96-year-old Malaysian woman who died at home in Sabah on June 12 and tested positive after her remains were brought to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. The source of the infection is being probed.

Four of the active cases are currently in intensive care with none needing ventilators.
