Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh has been summoned by Bukit Aman for questioning over a tweet she made back in March.
In the tweet, the former deputy women, family and community development minister had enquired about the fate of the National Strategic Plan to Address the Causes of Underage Marriage under her successor Siti Zailah Mohd Yusoff.
Bukit Aman CID deputy director (investigations/legal) Mior Faridalathrash Wahid told Malaysiakini that Yeoh (above) is being investigated under Section 505 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
Those found guilty of Section 505 - which pertains to statements conducing to public mischief - could face up to two years in jail, a fine, or both.
Those convicted of Section 233 - which involves improper use of network facilities or network service - could face up to one year in jail, an RM50,000 fine, or both. They could be further fined RM1,000 for every day the offence is continued after conviction.
Mior added that the police plan to take Yeoh’s statement on June 23 and that a “member of the public” had lodged a report against her tweet in question.
Contacted by Malaysiakini today, the DAP politician said she vowed to assist in the investigation.
“I will cooperate with the cops,” she said.
Taking to Twitter, Yeoh wondered if asking questions was now considered an offence.
“I have been called by Bukit Aman to give a statement for their probe into this tweet. Now we can’t even ask questions. There was no opportunity during the May Parliament session to ask questions either.
“This roadmap was the result of hard work by the Pakatan Harapan administration (and former minister) Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail,” she said.
Launched back in January, the plan had provided a roadmap on addressing the root causes of child marriage through policy change, law reform, programmes and collaboration among government agencies.
At the time, Wan Azizah said that a steering committee had already been set up to ensure the plan was fully implemented by 2025.
The investigation into Yeoh comes after the police said they were probing former water, land and natural resources minister Xavier Jayakumar over the May 18 Dewan Rakyat sitting.
The PKR Kuala Langat MP is being investigated under the Sedition Act 1948 over a video where he criticised the one-day sitting, saying the Perikatan Nasional government was afraid of having its fragile majority tested in the august house.
The investigation has since been completed and submitted to the Attorney-General's Chambers for further instruction.
