Sabah Umno chief Bung Moktar Radin dismissed the bid to make Warisan president Shafie Apdal a prime minister candidate as a joke meant to hurt the latter.
"Dr Mahathir Mohamad is trying to take down Shafie by putting him in conflict with Anwar Ibrahim. This is to confuse the public.
"This is a very funny suggestion. It is a joke that is meant to pit these two against each other," Bung (above) told Malaysiakini.
He added that it was unlikely Shafie would get full support from Pakatan Harapan, making it "impossible" for the Sabah chief minister to become prime minister.
Mahathir backed Shafie for prime minister in an effort to break the deadlock between him and Anwar over who should head government if Harapan retook Putrajaya.
The party chiefs of Amanah and DAP backed the proposal but the matter still needed to be approved within their parties and by the Harapan presidential council.
Anwar did not react positively to the news, making veiled remarks urging the public to reject "deceitful politics" and accusing others of scheming behind the scenes.
Sarawak deputy chief minister James Masing dismissed the gambit as Mahathir just playing politics.
