Three sons of former minister of foreign affairs Anifah Aman have reportedly threatened legal action against a Sabah assistant minister and a state news portal.
The threat is over claims of their alleged involvement in efforts to woo state assemblypersons to quit the ruling Warisan-led coalition.
Free Malaysia Today reported that the brothers - Ahmad Firdauss, Ahmad Zachry, and Mohammad Azzidyn - had instructed their lawyers to send legal notices to DAP's Kapayan assemblyperson Jannie Lasimbang (photo, above) and the Borneo Today news portal, demanding a retraction of allegations made against them, as well as an apology.
The report quoted lawyers for the trio as saying they denied "involvement in any manner".
“Our clients deny that they were involved in any manner whatsoever in attempting to induce assemblymen or any other member of the state legislative assembly to switch political parties.
“Nor did they appoint any agents to make an offer to the said assemblyman or any other member of the state legislative assembly to switch political parties," the lawyers were quoted as saying.
The lawyers reportedly sent a legal notice earlier today to retract and withdraw the statements implicating their clients and to publish a suitable apology upon terms and conditions to be approved by their clients.
They also reportedly warned that if they do not receive a favourable reply within two working days, they have strict instructions to file an injunction and action for defamation.
Borneo Today published a report yesterday in its Malay section that quoted Lasimbang as saying she was approached at her home by political agents who claimed they represented Anifah’s sons.
The former Suhakam commissioner also reportedly claimed the agent had tried to convince her to leave DAP and join the state opposition.
Free Malaysia Today further quoted Lasimbang as confirming receipt of the legal letter.
"I am seeking legal advice from party lawyers for now, before making any statement," she said.
It was previously reported that Lasimbang, along with DAP's Elopura assemblyperson Calvin Chong Ket Kiun had lodged police reports over their claims.
