Muhyiddin chairs Northern Corridor meeting in Pangkor

Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin for the first time chaired the 23rd Northern Corridor Implementation Authority (NCIA) meeting on Pangkor Island today.

The meeting, the first outside Putrajaya, was attended by Finance Minister Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz, Perak Menteri Besar Ahmad Faizal Azumu, Perlis Menteri Besar Azlan Man, Kedah Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor, and Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.

Also present was the Malaysian Industry-Government Group for High Technology (Might) joint-chairperson (Industry) Ahmad Tajuddin Ali as well as Petronas president and CEO Tengku Muhammad Taufik Kamadjaja Aziz.

Earlier, before attending the meeting which convened at 10.30am, Muhyiddin, who was on his first working visit to Perak, spent about half an hour inspecting the Pangkor Island passenger jetty which needed improvements to merit its status as a duty-free island.

During the visit, the prime minister was given a briefing by Ahmad Faizal on the proposed improvements to the jetty following an increase in tourist traffic.

At the meeting, NCIA CEO Jebasingam Issace John presented the Strategic Development Plan (SDP) 2021-2025 of the Northern Corridor Economic Region (NCER), which will be submitted to the menteris besar of Perak, Kedah, and Perlis, as well as to the Penang chief minister.

The SDP is a strategic framework that takes into account the current situation in NCER states, namely Perlis, Kedah, Perak, and Penang, in order to address the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Besides that, Muhyiddin interacted with two successful NCER entrepreneurs from Pendang, Kedah and Kangar, Perlis through video calls.

To mark his first working visit to Perak, Muhyiddin also visited three NCER entrepreneurs, Ismail Arshad who produces sea cucumber oil and extract, pufferfish handicraft maker Mohd Arshad Yusop (also known as Alang & Angry Fish) in Kampung Telok Gedong, and fishery product entrepreneur Rasid Ibrahim who owns Sate Ikan Paksu Enterprise.

The prime minister will later perform Zohor prayers at the Al-Khairiah Mosque, which is also known as Masjid Seribu Doa (Mosque of a Thousand Prayers), in Kampung Sungai Pinang, a new attraction on the resort island.
