Kota Tampan assemblyperson Saarani Mohamad has been sworn-in as Perak's 14th menteri besar.

He was sworn-in at Istana Iskandariah in Kuala Kangsar today.

This is the third swearing-in ceremony for the menteri besar post in Perak since the 2018 elections.

Perak ruler Sultan Nazri Shah said this historical moment reflected a failure in leadership.

An initial exco line-up of five members will be sworn in later at 2.30pm.

Speaking to reporters after the ceremony, Saarani said becoming menteri besar is a responsibility, and not something to be proud of because there are many burdens to bear ahead.

The Perak Umno chief was appointed the top state post following the ouster of Bersatu's Ahmad Faizal Azumu through a vote of confidence last week.

Umno initially had difficulty securing a majority, as PAS and Bersatu withheld support over the former's decision to vote out Faizal.

However, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi yesterday apologised for Perak Umno's actions, and an agreement was reached with PAS and Bersatu.

Zahid had also made an agreement with Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin and PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang regarding the distribution of positions in the new state government.
