After Bersatu secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin proposed the ruling parties form a grand coalition, Amanah deputy president Salahuddin Ayub raised a similar proposal to unite the opposition parties for the next general election.
When contacted by Malaysiakini, Salahuddin said the formation of a grand coalition among the opposition parties is a significant issue right before them.
He said this when asked to comment about Warisan president Shafie Apdal's call for the opposition to make a leadership change while positioning himself as an alternative to opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim.
"Let us get ready to face the next general election, and we are already late in our preparations due to the issues of Budget 2021 and taking over the government. We had tried but were not successful.
"I expect the general election will be held next year and we do not have much time," he added.
Salahuddin said the opposition parties must reunite in a grand coalition and if possible, add more parties such as Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman's Muda and Dr Mahathir Mohamad's Pejuang.
"As for who will lead the grand coalition, we can discuss it later. We must build the grand coalition first. So far, the leader who can lead (the coalition) is Anwar.
"Leave it to the wisdom (of the party leaders to decide on who will lead the grand coalition)," he said.
At Warisan's annual general assembly yesterday, Shafie urged the opposition to make a leadership change while positioning himself to take over. The party also hinted that it might expand to Peninsular Malaysia.
The opposition had in the past attempted to form various political pacts to oust the BN.
In 2018, it managed to defeat Umno-led BN via the formation of Pakatan Harapan, which also joined hands with Warisan. However, the Harapan administration only stayed in power for 22 months before it was ousted via a political coup.
Earlier this month, Amanah Youth chief Shazni Munir Mohd Ithnin had called upon all opposition parties to hold talks and work out terms for their new cooperation.
He made the call after the government passed the budgets of all federal ministries via division in Dewan Rakyat.
