Khairy Jamaluddin has given his assurance that the Health Ministry will look into every issue raised by the Hartal Doktor Kontrak (HDK) movement secretariat.
The health minister said this on social media following a virtual meeting today with the movement of contract doctors behind the nationwide strike back in July.
"This afternoon, I had a meeting with the Hartal Doktor Kontrak to hear issues and problems faced by the contract doctors. (We discussed) several issues, including assessment methods for permanent appointment, further study opportunities as well as the future of their profession.
"I have given my commitment to them that the ministry will look into every aspect raised and will work to find an interim solution and further moving toward a better solution," Khairy said.
Meanwhile, HDK said it will share what was discussed later.
Taking to Twitter, Aven Fauzi, a member of HDK, described the virtual meeting with Khairy and Health Ministry director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah as "a huge milestone" for the movement.
"A huge milestone for @HKontrak. Thank you @Khairykj and the Health Ministry for listening to us the contract doctors as part of the healthcare system in Malaysia. Let’s make a change!" Aven said.
The HDK movement has been gaining momentum since July, with contract healthcare workers organising a nationwide strike on July 26 by staging a walkout from their duties.
The contract healthcare workers demanded solutions to the shortcomings of the contract system that had been in force since 2016, such as poor job security and uncertain career prospects.
Malaysiakini has contacted the movement for comment.
