Lawyers seek postponement of Najib’s SRC conviction appeal verdict

On the eve of the verdict delivery on Najib Abdul Razak’s appeal to quash his conviction in the RM42 million SRC International corruption case, the former prime minister allegedly came in contact with Covid-19 positive persons.
A letter from Najib’s lawyers to the Court of Appeal stating this also claimed that large numbers of his legal team have also either become a mixture of casual contact and close contact, and one has become a Covid-19 positive case.
The letter from Messrs Shafee & Co, dated yesterday, is appealing to the Court of Appeal to vacate the scheduled decision date on Najib’s appeal, which is tomorrow, Dec 8.
The lawyers are also seeking for today’s scheduled hearing of Najib’s bid to adduce new evidence in his SRC appeal to be vacated as well.
According to the letter, it all started on Dec 4 when lead defence counsel Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, his son Muhammad Farhan and his wife, attended an event, where it was later revealed that there was a person who tested positive for Covid-19.
The lawyers claimed that the one who tested positive was the mother of a member of the legal team representing Najib, and that another separate member of the legal team also later tested positive.
They claimed that this was further compounded when Najib went to the law firm to affirm certain affidavits related to his bid to adduce new evidence in the SRC appeal.
“Furthermore, our client Mohd Najib Abd Razak had attended at Shafee & Co for the purpose of checking and affirming affidavits filed today (Dec 6).
“Due to that reason, the MySejahtera application status for all those involved have changed to either Close Contact and/or Casual Contact, whereby each one is waiting to undergo a PCR test.
“Due to the above reason, we have a social responsibility to this honourable court, as well as others involved, to inform about this.
“We humbly seek for this honourable court to vacate the hearing date (of Najib’s bid to adduce new evidence) on Dec 7, 2021 (today), and the decision date on Dec 8, 2021 (Wednesday) in light of what has happened,” the letter read.
As of press time, the Court of Appeal has yet to respond to the letter.
The Court of Appeal has scheduled Dec 8 to deliver its verdict on Najib’s appeal to quash his conviction, 12-year jail term and RM210 million fine in the RM42 million SRC corruption case.
