A Selangor lawmaker has called for the public to band together to launch a lawsuit against Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob for allegedly acting in bad faith when the state was hit by floods.
Hulu Kelang assemblyperson Saari Sungib claimed there was clear evidence that Ismail Sabri (above) had ignored early pleas for help and federal intervention in Selangor.
"Among the evidence is that he ignored pleas by the Selangor Menteri Besar (Amirudin Shari) asking for immediate aid when the floods were getting worse.
"Was there bad faith or mala fide by Ismail Sabri towards the Selangor government?
"As such, I urge the people of Selangor, especially those who were flood victims who have evidence to make accusations in a court of bad faith and treachery by Ismail Sabri towards them," Saari said in a statement yesterday.
Amirudin called the PM
On Tuesday, FMT reported Amirudin as saying that he had called the prime minister on the 17th with an urgent appeal for federal assets to be deployed to affected areas.
The menteri besar claimed that Ismail Sabri told him that this was not up to him and that it was under the purview of the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma).
However, Entrepreneur Development and Cooperative Minister Noh Omar said that the Selangor government already has access to federal assets such as the military via a disaster management committee chaired by the state secretary.
This committee, Noh said, consists of the state police chief, the commanders of the Armed Forces brigades in the state, and district officers, among others.
Thus far, 25 out of 46 flood fatalities in the country occurred in Selangor.
Meanwhile, a group of environmental lawyers is also planning to sue the Selangor government over deforestation in the state, which they claimed made the flooding worse.
