Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has again publicly pressed Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob to hold a fresh general election.
Zahid made the call four days after the expiry of Ismail Sabri's promise to Pakatan Harapan to not dissolve Parliament.
Ismail Sabri made this promise to Harapan in their memorandum of understanding (MOU) to give him time to implement several reforms.
However, that expiry date was often conflated with the tenure of the MOU, which only expires when Parliament is actually dissolved.
In a statement today, Zahid gave two reasons why a fresh election is needed immediately.
The first reason, he said, was that BN "needed to be dominant in the government again" in order to implement party decisions.
Secondly, he said the present government was facing instability, citing Bersatu's lobbying for cabinet positions as an example.
Zahid's statement was accompanied by the hashtags #JanganTungguLama and #NantiBNHilangPeluang, which translate to "Do not wait any longer" and "Or else BN will lose this opportunity".
Both Zahid and Ismail Sabri sit in the Umno supreme council. They are also part of a smaller leadership group known as the "Umno top five".
