Klang MP: Zahid 'selfish' for putting polls above rakyat's safety

Klang MP Charles Santiago has lambasted Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi for prioritising the holding of a general election even if there will be floods.

Calling Zahid selfish and shameless, Charles took aim at the former deputy prime minister’s focus on mobilising election machinery and regaining federal power.

“Zahid should organise an Umno flood brigade to help people fleeing their houses because of floods, just like ordinary folks did instead of asking people to vote.

“How can this guy be trusted to lead a country? It's shameless,” said Charles on Twitter.

He was responding to the Bagan Datuk MP’s remarks that the BN coalition is prepared to wade through floods if the 15th general election is held during the monsoon season.

This came after Pakatan Harapan criticised the possibility of holding national polls during a period where floods were expected to happen.

Zahid (above) has been pressing Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob to dissolve Parliament immediately after tabling Budget 2023 in early October.

Charles however said Zahid’s desire to hold the polls even during the flood season shows the latter’s desperation to have his corruption charges against him dropped.

“Those in Umno should be deeply ashamed of themselves if they allow Zahid to push on with his plan.

“But if they had an ounce of decency, they should find themselves another leader.

“To the rakyat, vote Zahid and his Umno buddies out in the next election. They don’t care about your welfare or your lives. Not even during floods, as Zahid has clearly demonstrated,” said Charles.

It should be noted that in 2017, when he was deputy prime minister, Zahid took a leading role in flood relief efforts in Harapan-held Penang.

However, he then urged Gerakan to retake the Penang government, saying the floods were a sign from God that the state was ripe for the taking.
