Noh Omar loses Tanjung Karang; ex-PAS MP Khairuddin contests under BN

Selangor Umno chief and incumbent Tanjong Karang MP Noh Omar has been dropped from contesting in the forthcoming general election (GE15).

In a statement today, BN secretary-general Zambry Abd Kadir announced that BN will field Tanjong Karang Wanita Umno chief Habibah Mohd Yusof as the candidate for the Tanjong Karang seat.

Meanwhile, it was also announced that former PAS MP Mohd Khairuddin Aman Razali will seek to retain his Kuala Nerus parliamentary seat under BN's ticket.

"BN has finalised the candidates for seven more parliamentary constituencies.

"With this announcement, it makes the number of seats contested by BN for the parliamentary constituencies to 178," Zambry said.

Other confirmed candidates are Che Abdullah Mat Nawi (Tumpat), A Kohilan Pillay (Batu), Chew Yin Keen (Bandar Tun Razak), Shamsulkahar Mohd Deli (Jempol) and Adnan Abu Hassan (Kuala Pilah).

On Tuesday, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced the names of candidates that the coalition had picked to contest in GE15.

However, candidates for several parliamentary seats were not announced during the event, including Tanjong Karang, with Zahid later telling reporters that they are "to be finalised soon".

The incumbent MPs dropped from BN's list for GE15 include those who were known to be not aligned with Zahid, such as Tajuddin Abdul Rahman (Pasir Salak), Shahidan Kassim (Arau) and Annuar Musa (Ketereh).

Purging party of dissidents?

As for Noh, sources previously told Malaysiakini that Umno's national leaders had been at odds with him. This was due to Noh allegedly holding talks with parties outside the BN coalition in Selangor.

Noh first won the Tanjong Karang in 1995 and has managed to retain it in every election ever since. He is now in his sixth term.

Khairuddin was a two-term Kuala Nerus MP and former plantation industries and commodities minister. He retained the seat in 2018 with a majority of 8,447 votes.

Meanwhile, Che Abdullah, who is also a former PAS leader, was dropped from being a PAS candidate when Mumtaz Md Nawi was announced as the candidate for the Tumpat parliamentary seat.

In the last general election, Che Abdullah won the seat on a PAS ticket with a comfortable majority of 17,500 votes - defeating BN and Pakatan Harapan candidates.
