Syed Saddiq declares RM1.9m net assets

GE15 | Muda president Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman, who is defending his Muar parliamentary seat in Johor, has declared RM 1,910,398.75 in net assets.

The 29-year-old reached this figure after deducting RM909,267.83 of liabilities from total assets valued at RM 2,819,666.58 as of Sept 30 this year.

Explaining the breakdown at a press conference today, he said he had RM45,239.89 in the bank and RM 1,247,783.53 in investments - such as fixed deposits, unit trusts, and mutual funds, among others.

The former youth and sports minister also declared that he had no jewellery, bonds or securities, licenses or permits, nor offshore accounts.

Syed Saddiq, who is single, said he had a family-owned property in Shah Alam, Selangor, valued at RM720,284.32 which he owned and paid 50 percent of.

He declared an unfinished condominium unit in Kuala Lumpur which he has 100 percent ownership valued at RM880,000. He is also still paying off a RM649,267.83 loan for this property.

Other debts included RM60,000 for a rental house in Petaling Jaya and RM200,000 towards Amanah Saham Nasional Bhd.

Syed Saddiq also declared his cats, Tobi and Meow Meow, as they were gifts, with a price tag of “invaluable”.

“I also declared my cats in 2018 when I served at the (Youth and Sports) Ministry because we had to declare any gifts that exceeded RM500.

“I don’t know the value of the cats so I listed them as ‘invaluable’ as they are like my children,” he explained.

He also pays RM757 in monthly instalments for a car owned by his brother, which Syed Saddiq uses frequently, and owns a Yamaha NVX motorcycle valued at RM8,500.

Set a new standard

During the press conference, he urged other politicians, especially former ministers, to also declare their assets.

“Declaring assets is important for the rakyat to know the source of funds, if the contracts come from a ministerial post or from the government.

“This is an important process. I will accept any criticism and suggestions with an open heart. But I hope that these critiques and suggestions are also extended to other politicians as well.

“Let us set a new standard in Malaysian politics,” he said.

The incumbent Muar MP is the first in Muda to declare his assets as had made it mandatory for other contesting candidates within the party to do the same.

Other Muda members contesting in the 15th general election are Mutalib Uthman (Masjid Tanah), Danial Abdul Majeed (Kepala Batas), Siti Rahayu Baharin (Tanjong Karang), Lim Wei Jiet (Tanjung Piai) and Shahrizal Denci (Kota Marudu).
