DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang said since PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang often accuses his party of Islamophobia, a commission should be set up to look into the matter.
He said the commission should invite Hadi and other PAS leaders to submit evidence of DAP and its allies promoting Islamophobia.
“I suggest that the federal government form a commission of Islamic and non-Islamic experts to report whether there are political parties promoting Islamophobia and the problem of Islamophobia and the phobias of other religions in Malaysia, especially from the viewpoint of the Rukun Negara objective of ‘achieving and fostering better unity among society’.
“The commission should invite Hadi and other PAS leaders to cooperate by sending a submission to substantiate the PAS allegation that DAP and PKR are promoting Islamophobia,” Lim said in a statement today.
He referred to an article published today by PAS organ Harakah which claimed DAP’s “secular” and PKR’s “liberal” policies were creating Islamophobia.
Lim (above) said there is no basis to these allegations but as PAS has made these claims publicly and repeatedly, they should be taken seriously.
Aside from looking into Islamophobia in the country, the commission should also make recommendations on preventing Malaysia from being divided by “toxic politics of lies, fear, hatred, race, and religion,” said Lim.
He said it is a “red light” that parties which fully accept Article 3 of the Federal Constitution are now being accused of Islamophobia, as it undermines the Rukun Negara and unity of Malaysians.
Article 3 of the Federal Constitution stipulates that Islam is the religion of the federation but other religions may be practised in peace and harmony.
Lim described this as an urgent issue which deserves the attention of the first meeting of the new cabinet under Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, once it is formed.
