MACC records Muhyiddin's statement in Bersatu accounts probe

The MACC has recorded a statement from former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin pertaining to the probe into Bersatu’s bank accounts, which have been frozen.

With the questioning, the anti-graft body is in the final stages of wrapping up the probe before the investigation paper is handed to the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) for further action, said reports.

According to reports, Muhyiddin (above) had his statement recorded at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya, from morning until noon yesterday.

“The investigation paper is complete and the decision whether or not to charge persons implicated in the case will be known soon.

“The two accounts (belonging to Bersatu) are still frozen,” they said. 

Aside from Muhyiddin, several other senior Bersatu leaders have also been previously questioned by the MACC.

Earlier this month, Malaysiakini reported that MACC had frozen two of Bersatu’s bank accounts to facilitate investigations under the Anti-Money Laundering and Anti-Terrorism Financing Act. The two accounts reportedly contained about RM40 million.

An MACC source claimed that the account freeze was over allegations that Bersatu received contributions amounting to about RM300 million from some 10 contractors who received various projects when the party was running the government.

Muhyiddin, who is Bersatu president, has denied the charges and said that he would write a letter to the MACC requesting the accounts to be unfrozen as it is hampering the party’s operations, such as paying staff wages and office rentals.
