A day after Dr Mahathir Mohamad met with Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin, the former’s son Mukhriz is hopeful that PN would consider Pejuang’s request to join or cooperate with them in the upcoming state polls.
Mukhriz, who is Pejuang president, said the party does not want to be perceived as spoilers who split the Malay votes.
As such, he said consolidating efforts towards securing those votes was the best approach for PN to face their rivals Pakatan Harapan and BN.
The former Kedah menteri besar said Pejuang did not have grand designs to dominate politics, aim for top positions, or rule any states.
“We are aware of our limitations,” he said, as reported by Bernama.
In mid-June, Mukhriz had denied in a Twitter posting that he would become Kedah menteri besar again following the state elections, amid speculation that there was such a plan.
“Please stop this nonsense propaganda. The rakyat are not as stupid as you think,” he said.
Mukhriz was formerly the Kedah menteri besar for one and a half terms, first under Umno and later under Harapan.
However, his second term was cut short when he followed his father in quitting Bersatu after the Sheraton Move.
Mahathir and Mukhriz later went on to form another party, Pejuang, but there appeared to be a split between the two when Mahathir left Pejuang in early February this year.
Mahathir went on to join Gerakan Tanah Melayu but later quit the movement as well.
In March, Pejuang applied to join PN for long-term cooperation but was rejected shortly after.
Mukhriz’s remarks today came just a day after Mahathir met with Muhyiddin, purportedly to discuss the “position and future of the Malays”.
Mahathir, who was prime minister twice, had long been seen to be concerned about his legacy for the country.
He had come out of retirement multiple times to go against his many former proteges, saying that he could not stand aside when various problems plagued the country.
Six states – Kedah, Terengganu, Kelantan, Penang, Selangor and Negeri Sembilan- will head to the polls on August 12.
