Lawmaker tells female MP to visit Langkawi 'wearing nothing'

PARLIAMENT | Langkawi MP Mohd Suhaimi Abdullah (Perikatan Nasional) caused an uproar in the Dewan Rakyat when he invited a female colleague to visit the island's beaches "wearing nothing".

He was responding to Teresa Kok (DAP-Seputeh), who asked him if visitors to Langkawi beaches are allowed to wear shorts.

"I especially want to invite YB Seputeh to come wearing nothing," he said, to groans and laughter from other members of the house.

When told to retract his statement by Chong Zhemin (DAP-Kampar), he doubled down on his sexist jibe.

"I forgot to say I would like to imagine how it would be if Seputeh came (to Langkawi) wearing nothing," Suhaimi (above, left) said.

This prompted Teresa to rebuke him for his "obscene" statement while Deputy Dewan Rakyat speaker Alice Lau told him to wrap up his speech and not waste time.

However, some MPs defended Suhaimi and blamed Teresa for asking an "inappropriate question".

Teresa had questioned Suhaimi if shorts were allowed in Langkawi, located in PAS-led Kedah.

This follows cases of individuals being fined in Kelantan for wearing shorts.

Not the first time

This was not the first time Suhaimi had raised eyebrows in the Dewan Rakyat.

In February, he reportedly had MPs on the edge of their seats with a tale of how a woman had invited him to her home and took off her blouse.

Suhami then claimed that the woman said she had lost one of her breasts after being attacked by her drug-addled son.

He told the story while stressing the importance of combating drug addiction among youths.

Suhaimi won Langkawi with a majority 13,518 votes, against four other candidates including former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
