Malacca DAP chief steps down, replaced by Kota Melaka MP

Malacca DAP chairperson Tey Kok Kiew has stepped down and vice-chairperson Khoo Poay Tiong will assume the post until the state party election in November.

Speaking at a press conference today, deputy chairperson G Saminathan said Tey (above) resigned on June 6 and a meeting was held last night to choose his successor.

At the meeting, 15 of the 20-member state committee unanimously endorsed Khoo, who is also the Kota Melaka MP for the post.

Saminathan said five members, including Tey, were absent from the meeting.

According to him, Tey had contemplated resigning since he had held the post for a long time. He had also resigned from the state committee.

Tey first became the state chief in 2015 but resigned in 2021 after DAP’s dismal performance in the state election. He became the chairperson again in January last year.

Khoo, who was present at the press conference, thanked Tey for his contribution and dedication.

He disclosed that the state committee also unanimously adopted a recommendation to retain his predecessor in the state committee and proposed that he become the state DAP adviser.

“I would like to thank the entire state committee for unanimously electing me as state chief. I will treat the position as transitional and accept the position to ensure the stability of the party,” he said.

Khoo said he would hold the post until the state congress and party elections in November, following which party members can decide on a new leadership.

“We will return the mandate to the party members and elect a new state committee,” he added.

He pointed out that at this stage, the party grassroots, party leaders and leaders must focus on serving the people and ensuring excellence in the state government.
